Montana Angler has access to several miles of this productive small stream above Sutherlin Reservoir. Located east of White Sulphur Springs, the creek is set in the bottomland surrounded by open fields in the middle of a large ranch. Elk are often seen grazing on the hillsides that rise in all directions and wildflowers are plentiful in the early summer.
The North Fork of the Smith is a good summertime fishery that fishes best in July, August and early September. There is rarely any reason to fish anything other than a dry fly here as the numerous Rainbow and Brook Trout are eager to feed on the surface. The trout average 10-12" but there are some surprises lurking under the deep, dark undercut banks. The North Fork is an ideal place to spend a summers afternoon tossing dry flies on a light rod.
