Salmonflies on the Madison, caddis on the Yellowstone, PMD’s on the Missouri River, and now a best friend to enjoy it all with you. Introducing Montana Angler’s Rent-a-Labrador Retriever program. Beginning immediately, anglers on guided day trips, overnight camping and fishing trips, and all-inclusive lodge trips can choose from a variety of well-behaved and expertly trained canine fishing companions.
“On nearly every river in Montana, a black Lab is as common as a caddis hatch,” says Montana Angler’s Director of Operations Zach Montano.
Despite the French Bulldog being the number one dog in America for three years in a row and a Giant Schnauzer threepeating at Westminster, a Labrador Retriever's blend of dedication and temperament paired with their hearty coat and love of water makes the breed the natural choice for the variety of waters and weather when fly fishing in Montana.
Montano adds: “It is the perfect fit. We thought about having a Rent-a-Border Collie, but those dogs are just too neurotic and none of our guides were willing to be seen with a Standard Poodle or any kind of Doodle for that matter.”
For decades many of Montana Angler’s guides have brought to management a variety of ways to enhance their guest’s experiences. Despite being unsuccessful in having all MA guests take a required Reach Cast Course prior to fishing, guides are very happy guests now have the option to rent a black Lab for their fly fishing trip.
“We are also focused on the safety of these dogs,” adds Montana Angler ‘s Director of Outfitting Jimmy Armijo-Grover. "Each guide is now required to carry a pair of the Orvis PRO Dog Waders.”
