Fishing
Mayazul provides excelent access to the vast flats of Ascension Bay and the Si Ka'an biosphere. This vast protected flats system is home to one of the most robust saltwater flats ecosystems on the planet and provides excellent mixed species opportunities.
Rods are available to borrow at the lodge. For anglers bringing equipment bring three rods when visiting Grand Slam if they wish to target multiple species: 8 weight for bonefish, 9 weight for permit and a 10 weight for tarpon, snook and barracuda. If fishing in pairs, often you can share the 9 and 10 weight but it is nice to have two bonefish rods in case you wade fish.
Bonefish
Ascension bay offers excellent year round opportunities for bonefish. Sight casting is the norm and the protected lagoons of Ascension bay hold large numbers of bonefish. When conditions are right the action is often excellent throughout the day.
Tarpon
Resident tarpon are found in Ascension Bay year round. Baby tarpon are often located in some of the mangrove systems, but much larger tarpon (some over 100lbs) roam larger flats. Tarpon can be encountered any month of the year. In the late spring additional migratory fish join the resident tarpon.
Permit
Ascension Bay is famous for its excellent opportunities for permit. Permit can be found year round on the flats systems with Ascension Bay. Permit prefer warmer water so mid winter fishing depends on weather. Stable high pressure days can produce decent shots but cold fronts will move the fish off the flats. Permit fishing becomes more stable in March and extends through October.
Snook
Ascension bay can offer exceptional snook fishing. This is a terrific gamefish that generally prefers to be in or near mangrove systems. At low tide snook will often leave the mangrove to cruise beaches. Sight casting to snook often involves making tight casts to snook that slowly cruise in and out of the mangrove roots.
