The Chubut River offers some of the fastest dry fly action in the world for aggressive rainbows and browns. This overnight river trip provides access to 60km of water that flows across a private estancia. The only way to access this great trout water is to spend three or four days floating and camping.
The outfitters that we work with in Argentina take "camping" to another level. Each day two gear boats will depart in advance of our fishing boats to move down river and establish camp. The camps are elaborate and include tents with cots, sleeping pads and sleeping bags (2 anglers per sleeping tent), heavy duty wing tarps for staying out of the sun and a large dinner tent just in case rain moves in. Meals are elaborate and always accompanied by the delicious wines of the Mendoza province.
The Chubut is a smaller river and filled with a healthy supply of medium sized trout in the 12-17" range with a few larger trout up to 22" caught on most trips. Catch rates are typically high and 100 fish days are a real possibility. Because of the logistics required the river sees little pressure and the trout are eager and willing to attack foam attractor patterns such as Fat Alberts. Early in the season a 3 day trip is fine but 4 days should be planned at the end of the Argentine summer.

Your days on the river include all meals, starting with breakfast, consisting of different kinds of eggs, bacon, jam, toast, fruits, juice, tea and coffee. Lunch is normally along the river. It typically consists of homemade bread, cheese, salami, prosciuto, smoked trout, fresh salads and other appetizers, different cuts of meat, or chicken as a main dish, plus dessert. All this is served with wine, sodas, water and coffee or tea. Dinners are an elaborate affairs and expect to enjoy some traditional asados (barbeques), local sides and fresh salads.
Fishing Program
We always combine the Chubut overnight with other fishing components that may include staying at a private estancia nearby in Argentina, staying at the Carrileufu River Lodge to fish Los Alerces National Park, fishing Chile at the Futa Lodge, making a trip to the remote Rio Pico area farther south, or heading to Northern Argentina for some Dorado fishing at Pira. We will talk with your group when planning your trip to help you desing the perfect game plan.
Location
The Chubut flows across the Chubut province of Argentina. The closest airport is Esquel but we can also target this float from Bariloche which has multiple flights per day. The take out is just an hour from Esquel. Typically we spend the first night at a lodge in Cholila which is 1.5 hours from the Esquel airport or 2.5 hours from the Bariloche airport.
